Afghan Design

Afghan is the name applied in the carpet trade to carpets produced by the Turkoman tribes inhabiting Afghanistan. It is said that 15% of the population of Afghanistan still maintain nomadic characteristics. The origin of these people is varied and often blurred due to the result of ethnic combinations that have developed over much time in the region. However, their origins can often be clearly recognized through the carpets that each tribe has woven. The largest of tribes is that of the Pathans, but there are also tribes descended from Turkish, Mongolian, Uzbek and, above all, Turkoman origin. Afghan carpets have a simple layout with a style that often follows geometric shapes and patterns. They are very dark in colour, with a prevalence of purple reds, black, brown, and sometimes the addition of white un-dyed cotton and cream camel hair.
