Kashgai rugs (also spelled as Qashgai, Qashqai, or Kashqai) are made by tribes in the South-West of Persia in a province called Fars. The tribes are thought to be of Mongol-Turkoman descent and named after Jain Agha Kashgai who was appointed overlord of Fars by Shah Abbas in the 16th century. Kashgai rugs generally have bright palettes of red or rust and share links with Caucasian weaving. They often depict highly stylized animals, for example, similar to the motifs in Caucasian rugs. Kasghai rugs are generally thick and very durable, using strong wool piles on wool bases.
